I was an air traffic controller in the Military. On one particular clear, sunny day, a marine helicopter said he was approaching my airfield and requested terminal information. As he got closer, I kept telling him he was not in sight. I finally cleared him for landing and advised him one last time he was not in sight. Then.....silence.

About two minutes later, Osan Airbase control tower called us and asked if we cleared a Cobra gunship to land at our field "not in sight procedures." when I told him yes, they reported that he landed at their airport and immediately took off without contacting them. Doh!

About 5 minutes later, guess who popped up in the left downwind asking for landing instructions? 4951

Everybody wants to blame the Pilot. the Pilot is only part of the issue. I saw a lady on the news saying that he should learn how to read a map. I wonder if she knew how to read a map from 30,000 feet.So the airports these days have computer guided radar which direct them to the specific airports. Once the Pilot started decent, he should have been notified by the tower he was to low,, but it may have been to late. 7 miles from an airport is not that hard to mess up, we get lost with our GPS in our own town.. Now you put a small runway in the path of one airport, and guarantee it would happen more. 4951
