Danish cinnamon rolls too spicy for EU rulesThe Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recently discovered that Danish cinnamon rolls and twists contained more coumarin — a chemical compound in the most common variety of cinnamon — than EU rules allow.Danish bakers protested, saying the EU limit is too strict, and would make it hard, if not impossible, to make their cherished pastries.The EU limit for so-called "fine baked goods" is set at 15 milligrams of coumarin per kilogram of pastry. The Danish agency found last year that more than half of the 74 food samples it took from bakeries, supermarkets and importers contained more coumarin than that.Excessive intake of coumarin can cause liver damage."A grown man like me could eat like 10 'kanelsnegle' every day for several years and not even get near the limit of what's dangerous to my liver," said Anders Grabow, a spokesman for the Danish Bakers' Association.The agency asked Danish bakers to reduce the amount of cinnamon they sprinkle in the dough for sweet treats like the "kanelsnegel" (cinnamon roll) and "kanelstang" (cinnamon twist). 4951

@FoFa:

Ritz crackers are NOT a grain. Bureau-crats are so wrapped up in following these crazy rules that they completely overlook common sense. 4951

@donnatella: Want to bet it is more about that $5 charge for finding a discrepancy?

I wouldn't put it past them. I would also refuse to pay it, just out of principle and would also fight that straight to the top, whether or not it was a waste of time, effort and money. That would also be a worthy cause to notify the media and even a lawsuit just to stop that unbelievable insanity. I would gladly lose money by filing suit and hiring counsel just to bring it out in the open. That was a perfectly healthy lunch and that incident was outrageous and asinine. Yes, it is "just $5.00" but there are some small issues worth fighting for and this is one of them. God help the fool that would dare do that to me or my child.  I would break out a level of crazy that would make their nightmares seem like a happy place.   4951

hmmmm canada......and it still doesn't say that this was a govt imposed fine....the fine in fact was levied by the daycare. those with children in daycare might be familiar with practices by daycares such as penalties for late pickup, etc. and this might just be some such zealous employee padding the daycare's coffers. i doubt that you really have anything to worry about at the moment 4951

There has always been controversy over what's included in school lunches. Have you seen our school lunches? OMG. 4 starches and a fruit Cup is NOT a balanced meal.
It's up to me what my kids eat. My son has Asberger's and his issues include food aversions to the point where he would throw up if he smelled or saw certain common foods. He would only eat certain things, so that's what I packed. I'm glad that was 15 years ago cause things have gotten way out of hand in our schools!

Home school!I'd give my kid a note.  If they try to supplement his lunch, he could give them the note.  "What's in this lunch bag is none of your business." 4951
