@QueenB: No, way more expensive to replace than fixing a section of pipe. A backflow preventer is part of a sprinkler system that keeps water in the watering system from flowing back into your drinking water. The valve on top is brass and expensive. When water freezes and expands in there, the soft brass metal will burst.
